Open gardens is an event that takes place every other year.
Our last one was in 2019, and was incorporated with an art exhibition.
We also celebrated the newly opened memorial gardens at St Mary’s
church by starting the event from here.
A map was collected, for a small fee, from the church grounds, so that
people could see where to go in the village to enjoy the art and the gardens.
Unfortunately, the heavens opened at the launch and that influenced our
numbers, still many people braved the weather and we did see a glimmer
of sun by the end. It was a very worthwhile event, but such a shame that
we could not control the weather!!
We had 9 local, talented artists taking part by either showing their art
in their own houses in the village, or using the spaces and gardens of
the other artists.
We also had 17 different gardens for the public to come and enjoy. They
varied from large to small, and from one end of the village (last house
on Wickwar Road) to the other. (Kingswood house, opposite KLB)
All were stunningly beautiful with different plants, flowers, herbs, vegetables,
ponds, pebble pools, and ideas for the public to take away.
The children were not forgotten, as a treasure hunt around the village
gardens was put in place for them to enjoy too. This required the children
to draw the answers to the clues, to fit in with the art theme of the
open gardens.
The raffle did extremely well mainly because the paintings, that a few
of the artists had donated, were some of the very attractive prizes on
offer.
The day finished at Tubbs Turf tennis courts and grounds with a BBQ and
bar, which was enjoyed by all.
2022 should be a year for Open Gardens again. having taken a couple of years break. Come back here for more information as it becomes available.
